Breast cancer

Women at high risk for breast cancer should have an MRI scan along with their annual mammogram, according to new guidelines from the American Cancer Society.

Guidelines from the American College of Physicians recommend women with a low risk for breast cancer talk to their doctor before starting to have mammogram screening at age 40.

Tamoxifen and Raloxifene for Prevention

Raloxifene (Evista) works as well as tamoxifen (Nolvadex) in reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in women with BRCA gene mutations, indicates an important study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).Raloxifene may pose less risk for blood clots than tamoxifen, suggests the JAMA study. However, a New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) study notes that raloxifene still produces a small increase in the risk for blood clots and stroke. These drugs may not be safe for women with pre-existing heart problems.

Earth: A Borderline Planet For Life?

Recycling is important even on a planetary scale," Valencia explained.

Valencia and her colleagues, Richard O'Connell and Dimitar Sasselov (Harvard University), examined the extremes to determine whether plate tectonics would be more or less likely on different-sized rocky worlds. In particular, they studied so-called "super-Earths"-planets more than twice the size of Earth and up to 10 times as massive. (Any larger, and the planet would gather gas as it forms, becoming like Neptune or even Jupiter.)

The team found that super-Earths would be more geologically active than our planet, experiencing more vigorous plate tectonics due to thinner plates under more stress. Earth itself was found to be a borderline case, not surprisingly since the slightly smaller planet Venus is tectonically inactive.

Barack Obama says victory in South Carolina proves he has diverse ...

With wins in heavily white Iowa and in South Carolina, where about half of Saturday's voters were black, Obama said he has proven he can win in any region.

He said he wants to disprove "the assumption that young people are apathetic" and "the assumption that African-Americans can't support the white candidate; whites can't support the African-American candidate; blacks and Latinos can't come together."

Even as he spoke, Obama got a boost from Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy.

"Over the years, I've been deeply moved by the people who've told me they wished they could feel inspired and hopeful about America the way people did when my father was president," she wrote in the Sunday's edition of The New York Times. "That is why I am supporting a presidential candidate in the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama."

After his speech, Obama flew to Macon, Ga., where he planned to attend a church service Sunday before campaigning in Birmingham, Ala.

Republicans trade harsher charges as top Democrats wrangle over ...

I sincerely hope people will see through these sneaky tactics the sheer numbers of Obamabots who DISPROPORTIONALLY FLOOD to all these articles with message boards attached to them, are using.

Also, does anyone else see the contradiction between Obama's message of "unity", & these nasty, uncivilized, & vitriolic Obamabot attacks of Hillary on these online article message boards?

It's my estimation this was all a very well constructed attack plan by Oprah's gigantic, & extremely well oiled multimedia machine, when she decided to influence the next presidential election, with her power parlay move.

And to these same throngs of mindless Obamabots who keep bringing up this "experience issue" when comparing Hillary to Obama, one only has to compare the first day of occupancy of the next couple to get into the White House with all previous couples who've occupied the White House to understand how experience matters.

Back from a 45-day stint in Holland to train for short and penalty corners, he is devoting at least an hour solely to perfect his penalty attack.

The PHL is power play as no team can be written off and that is the charm of the tournament, feels Kanwal. Last year the Orissa team outplayed to prove how the best team on the day wins, remembers Kanwal.

On his game Kanwal feels the rough patches are well behind him, the police games and the PHL are beginning of a new innings in his career. Wishing his fans to pray for him, Kanwals heart warms up at the thought of his greatest fan in his daughter Rehmat who will be cheering her dad heading the Sher-e-Jalandhar squad in the PHL. Overuse plagues young athletes

ST. LOUIS -- Elaine Gill, 16, wanted to run faster. So she started running more. A lot more. Sometimes she'd run 50 miles a week.At first the extra miles paid off, and Elaine cut several minutes off her 5K cross country time. Then, during a race, a bone in her foot broke. Now, she can't run at all.Such is the plight of a growing number of athletes, both male and female, who train their young bodies past the point of diminishing returns and right into injuries. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that more than 30 million children and teens participate in organized sports each year. Of those, about 3.5 million seek treatment for overuse injuries and chronic fatigue from overtraining. Though no data exist, local sports medicine specialists say they've seen a steady increase in the number of injured and over-trained athletes between ages 8 and 18 by as much as 25 percent in recent years.Experts attribute that increase to more and more children specializing in only one sport and playing it year-round for school, select and traveling teams.
