| Druggists seeking enlarged care role
The drugstore has long held two options for the sick: medications made available only with a doctor's prescription or less potent drugs sold over the counter. Now the Food and Drug Administration is considering a third class of drugs: "behind-the-counter" medications that would be available without a prescription, but only after consultation with a pharmacist. Birth-control pills, cholesterol-lowering medicine and weight-loss drugs, available now by prescription, might be candidates. "We're looking at improving access to safe and effective drugs," said Ilisa Bernstein, the FDA's director of pharmacy affairs. .
Report: Jose Guillen, Matt Williams bought performance-enhancing drugs
Williams was a five-time All-Star during his 17-year major league career with San Francisco, Cleveland and Arizona. He was playing for the Diamondbacks in 2002 when records indicate he purchased $11,600 worth of growth hormone, steroids and other drugs, the Chronicle reported. Williams' final season in the majors was 2003. The Chronicle reported that Williams, in an interview Monday, said a doctor advised him to try growth hormone to heal a severe ankle injury he sustained during spring training in 2002. Williams is now a broadcaster for the Diamondbacks. "We obviously just learned of this," team president Derrick Hall said in a statement Tuesday. "Matt informed us that a doctor recommended its use to help heal his ankle injury. It was a substance that he was not familiar with at the time, and according to him, did not like its effects after sampling.
Colorado Bioscience Association Showcases the State’s Most Promising ...
Colorado research institutions have begun reaping the rewards of legislation allocating state funds for bioscience research. HB 1360, sponsored by Representative Jim Reisberg (D-Greeley) and Senator Ron Tupa (D-Boulder), was signed into law by Governor Bill Owens last summer. $2 million in state funds was awarded to 27 bioscience proof of concept projects at six Colorado universities and research institutions. Initial reports are expected by the end of 2007. .

For instance, a drug such as Depakote, approved originally as an adult anti-seizure medication, is now also used to combat bipolar disorder in children, even though it has not been widely tested as a safe bipolar remedy for youngsters. The drug has been linked to liver failure in children younger than 2 and fetal abnormalities in pregnant women. Large clinical tests of children are uncommon, said Dr. Dianne Murphy, who heads FDA's office of pediatric therapeutics. "The fundamental underpinning of a trial is that the person who is participating does so at their own volition with the full comprehension of what they're doing." This makes ethical clinical testing of children difficult, she said. Even within Monroe County, opinions vary about which medications can be used.
Local Pharmacies Who Do and Don't Carry Plan B
Plan B, the emergency contraception, is known as a back-up method for preventing pregnancy. It's been available at Planned Parenthood, but now you can get it without a prescription at pharmacies if they carry it. You have to be 18 or older to get it. But, we found out some pharmacies in Lufkin, do not even carry it. Michelle Green, with Planned Parenthood, said, "The FDA approved this emergency contraceptive to be available over the counter status for individuals. The whole purpose is that women could have access to this medication. If you don't carry it you have no access." The East Texas News spoke to Abeldt's Pharmacy, who says they won't carry it because of the controversy involved. Timberland Discount Pharmacy won't carry it for personal reasons.
2 dead, suspect at large after shooting at missionary training campus
We had assistance from Wheat Ridge Police Department as well as Jefferson County Sheriff's Office," said Medina. "Unfortunately, he remains at large at this moment." The suspect is described as a white male, about 20 years old, who was wearing a dark coat. He may have been wearing a dark beanie or skull cap, may have had a beard and may have been wearing glasses. "The young man – I don't know who he is; I don't think [the victims] knew him – but he must be going through a lot personally in his own life to do something like this," said Warren. Police say they do not know whether the shooting was random or if there was a motive. Warren says YWAM has open worship times when the public is allowed on their campus. "Our belief is that only God is the judge and our place is to forgive and that's a difficult thing to do, but really, I think it's the right thing to do," said Warren.
Rangers in same position as this time last year with 54 points
And there were overblown rumors of a rift within the dressing room and questions about Renney's ability to pull it all together. Sound familiar? Of course, it took one of the most effective trades in Rangers history - the Feb. 5 acquisition of Sean Avery - to get the 2006-07 team home. And it is unreasonable to believe Glen Sather can pull off another such catalyzer. But then, it also took some pretty impressive stretch runs by several other teams to make it so hard for the Rangers to make the playoffs. And they had to make their run largely without a key player - Brendan Shanahan was lost for 15 games and diminished for the rest in a horrifying collision Feb. 17. .
